Public Book Review & Discussion (Gōhyōkai) of Queer Migration and Drag in Japan: Queering Identity, Participation and Belonging by Phillip Hughes
This event is a public book review and discussion that uses Queer Migration and Drag in Japan: Queering Identity, Participation and Belonging as a point of departure to examine questions of queer mobility and migration, nightlife economies, and drag as cultural practice. Rather than a one-way lecture, the program brings together talk, drag performances, and discussion with queer migrant performers whose perspectives and practices are central to the themes under review.
The conversation is designed to make visible the forms of knowledge that emerge in backstage dialogue and lived practice, and to treat performers not as subjects to be spoken about, but as participants in the public discussion. Performance and dialogue work together to communicate dimensions of experience that academic language can sometimes compress.
