International Symposium “Queer Mobilities and Markets in and around Japan”

Queer Mobilities and Markets in and around Japan is an international symposium at the University of Osaka on 26 March 2026. It brings together researchers working on lives at the intersections of gender, sexuality, and mobility, and how they move across borders, navigate institutions, and become entangled in economic worlds. Bringing interdisciplinary research into conversation, the program examines how belonging emerges through legal status, labor, and care, including migration and asylum processes as well as urban economies of gender and sexuality. Across the symposium, speakers consider how governance and markets organise everyday life, and how people rely on networks of solidarity and mutual aid to survive and make a life.
