Profile
Dr. Phillip Hughes earned a Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Intercultural Studies, Kobe University, in 2022, where they also completed a Master’s degree in 2017. Prior to studying in Japan, Phillip received a Bachelor’s degree in Japanese and Public Relations from Liverpool John Moores University in 2012.
Research Interests
Phillip’s research is in the field of queer migration, which explores the intersections of gender, sexuality, and migration. Their focus is on how this intersects with drag performance in Japan, with a particular emphasis on feminist epistemology and phenomenological methodologies. Additionally, they are interested in Tojisha-kenkyu—collaborative participatory research conducted by marginalized groups for their own communities—which informs and enriches the approach to studying lived experiences.
Currently, Phillip is working on a first book, expected to be published in 2025 with Routledge, which explores the experiences of queer migrants in Japan by examining how gender, sexuality, embodiment, and drag performance affect lived experiences.
